Getting Out with Accidental Mama

~~by Sarah Lolley~~

Last weekend when the air felt like spring was coming soon I said, “Yes! I want to get out of my cave too! I am going out!”

Raw Artists Event

I began Thursday with a new monthly event that brings all categories of art together for a gallery and performance event under one roof. “Raw: Natural Born Artists”, hosted by Nakturnal, is a national network of artists that includes all forms of creative expression. The networking events connect Make-up Artists, Fashion Designers, Performers, Filmmakers, Painters, Photographers, Jewelry Designers, and Psychic Artists with buyers and other artists.

Director Leigh Yock chose 20-30 artists and set them up with a website portfolio and photographs of their work. A monthly showcase event at the nightclub Cavo in the Strip District has featured fire dancers, a fashion show, decapitated doll art, childlike paper cut outs, apparel lines, home décor, tattoo artists, and zombie filmmakers.

Last Thursday was the second event in the series. I slipped out of the house when the babes were in bed with Patrick, promising to be back soon. Cavo is my new favorite club, being that it is the only club I have been to in five years. That might not mean so much, but I’d like to think it makes me particularly sensitive critic.

Raw Artists events currently take place in 54 cities and are spreading soon. The founders are working on networking Australia and Canada into the mix. Pittsburgh’s next event takes place at Cavo on April 4, 2013.

History Uncorked

Next day I was up with the screaming mimi’s and ready for the night fall again. This time I was not going home so early… it was Mama’s Night Out!

“History Uncorked” is the Heinz History Center’s annual mixer for young professionals and anyone else who wants to act like a teenager for a night. Seriously, this was the most talkative, friendly crowd I have experienced since exiting my rave days, and everyone was dressed a lot nicer.

It was a bit difficult keeping track of everyone with so many places to roam with an entire museum at our disposal, but we all seem to make it to the top before turning into a pumpkin, or in this case a pierogie. It is the Pittsburgh History Center after all and foods like hoagies are the native. That’s okay though. This mama picked up a tofu taco on the way home.

Q-Ball

In the Red Maze at the Q-Ball

Saturday night was date night and I wished for more sleep in my head so I wouldn’t pass out so soon. Quantum Theatre’s annual fundraising gala, “Q-Ball”, took place at Bakery Square. Quantum is known for transforming an unused setting into a backdrop for a theatrical performance, often times abstract, classical, or avant-garde; and at times perverse. Patrick and I love to go in the summer when they build stages and sets outside in gardens and parks.

This year they created a forest setting in the empty commercial space at Bakery Square. It was difficult to find the bathrooms located in the neighboring coffee shop but nonetheless we had a good time. Quantum’s Karla Boos and her creative team set up a red curtain maze with colorful allegorical photography, dancers, and a man in a bathtub. It was a great little romp before my head hit the pillow and I hibernate until sun actually comes out for good!
