Surprise! Surprise!! Surprise!!!

The 3 best surprises of my life!

Who doesn’t love a great surprise? What can be better than a surprise party, an unexpected gift, a spontaneous engagement…. or a surprise pregnancy?!

Many women know at the moment of conception that they are pregnant while others may know after that first missed period. That was not me.

My first pregnancy was an insane surprise! Insane as in OMG! What is going on here!!? Of course, I had dreamed of this moment all of my life, lived for it actually. I just had never dreamed that I would be only two months shy of my first anniversary, waiting tables on the night shift at Eat’N Park, living with my parents, married to a guy making $7 to sweep floors in a mill and commuting with my mother. To top it off, I never imagined myself lying on the floor of my parents’ guest bathroom wrapped around the toilet crying. My dream was much classier than all that.

Surprise! Pregnant! The Little Prince.

Surprise #1. The Little Prince Dartanyian

Dartanyian was 13 months old when I picked him up from daycare after teaching all day. Jamie was a restaurant manager working 12 to 14 hour shifts 6 days a week, so it often felt like I was a single mom. Most days it was just the two of us. One particular day we walked into our little cottage house both thrilled to be home as it was about 3ish and earlier than normal for us. We had plenty of time to play before bedtime. I put Dartanyian down and sat on the couch to take my shoes off. The keys were still in my hand and my schoolbag was still on my arm. Then everything went blank.

I woke to a dark house, laying on the floor with my little prince standing at my knee repeating, “Num, num, num, num?” over and over in a pathetically sad cry. His diaper was bunched down one leg of his jumper at its fullest possible capacity. The chaos of a 13-month-old boy left unattended for SIX hours lay in fragments all over the house.

Surprise!! I was pregnant with Princess Petunia!

Surprise #2. Princess Petunia (aka Kalani)

When the Prince and Princess were well out of diapers at 6 and 4 years under their jammies this made us a “complete” family. Storybook! Two children for two parents.

Surprise! Mom wanted another. Really? Did I? Yep. That still astounds me. My pregnancies were anything but enjoyable or pain free. There were actually a number of visits to the hospital for the duration of both. Because of the seriousness of the problems I had, Jamie was never going to agree to a third. Once, during pregnancy #2 he actually thought I was having a stroke; I honestly had no idea what was happening then, nor could I even speak during that experience. But I was still wanting another baby.

Surprise! I must be a crazy woman!

Not even two weeks later, after The Discussion we had about a third pregnancy, this Crazy Woman decided to take a pregnancy test just because. As it turns out at the point of The Discussion I already was in my 4th week of pregnancy.

I guess God had other intentions for me.

Surprise!!! Pregnant again!!! Enter our 3rd son, nicknamed Finnius.

Da Fin.

Surprise #3. Nickname Finnuis!
